A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future

A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future

by Daniel H. Pink

My rating: C

Goodreads synopsis: The future belongs to a different kind of person with a different kind of mind: artists, inventors, storytellers-creative and holistic “right-brain” thinkers whose abilities mark the fault line between who gets ahead and who doesn’t. Drawing on research from around the world, Pink outlines the six fundamentally human abilities that are absolute essentials for professional success and personal fulfillment-and reveals how to master them. A Whole New Mind takes readers to a daring new place, and a provocative and necessary new way of thinking about a future that’s already here.

My thoughts: I read this for a class this Spring. I really wasn’t terribly impressed by this book. There were several interesting studies quoted, but overall the author’s opinions were much different from my own. I felt like the entire book was just him restating the same thing in another mundane way. Skip this unless you are seriously interested in the artistic mind versus the left brain.

Happy birthday, baby sister!

Happy 19th birthday to my beautiful little sister, Chelsea!

Letter to an E-Reader, revised

For my previous correspondence with said E-reader, please reference this post.

Dearest Nook,

I had an unhealthy need to have you. I whined. I pouted. I made a ridiculously obnoxious  savings jar to guilt my husband.

Then, a godsend came in the mail. A godsend in the form of a refund check from the college. I thought I owed them money but instead they sent me $1300. Off to Best Buy I went, $20 off coupon in hand.

I came home with you and it wasn’t quite love at first sight, but I had a sincere attachment nonetheless. I researched. I browsed. I was indecisive. I downloaded my first library book and began to read.

I was finally in love.

Let’s keep this love affair going, shall we?

LA Times Festival of Books (Part 3)

I meant to post this quite a few days ago, but alas I failed.

LATFOB Part 3- Saturday & Sunday afternoon

Saturday was filled with long, hot times listening to awesome authors followed by more hot times with fun friends.

We started the day listening to a panel of awesome YA authors, including 2 I was really excited about, Robin Benway and Gayle Forman. Gayle Forman was so funny. She was worried about everyone burning so she passed sunscreen out to the audience.

Here’s Tameka and I dying from heatstroke:

And more great shots from the rest of the book festival:

(L-R) Me, Tameka, Jess, Crystal, and Becca

Robin Benway and I

Crystal and IMe with Ally Condie

They wouldn’t let us take pictures with Duff, so we snuck this one.

Becca, Crystal, and I with Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. They were SO nice!

Me with Lisa McMann. She’s SO nice and is a talented author and fellow Arizona girl.

Me with Alyson Noel. Don’t forget to head over to Becca’s blog and enter for a signed copy of her book!

And finally, our haul:

There was SO much more that happened, but for now this will have to do.

LA Times Festival of Books, part 2

Day 2- Tucson to LA

We set out early Friday morning in our trusty silver Prius:

We picked up Adam and Crystal and made our merry way through the (very boring) desert of Arizona.

Becca drove:

We saw pink slug-bugs.

We were deemed white enough to enter California without question.

We saw dinosaurs.

We, of course, stopped to take pictures near dinosaurs.

One of us is clearly dorkier than the rest.

We made it to our hotel. Yay!

Then, we ventured down to see the ocean and to grab some dinner.

Adam had a close call with the ocean.

Adam was not impressed that we enjoyed taking our time to make decisions. This is is “Order, woman!” face. He is of course, far too nice to actually say that. And it was good.

LA Times Festival of Books, part 1

I’ve been a bad, bad blogger and an even worse book nerd. Remember me telling you a long time ago that I was planning to go to the LA Times Festival of Books (LATFOB from here on out)? Well, I did, and I had an amazing time. I just never blogged about it. After I got back, I was seriously so busy and it seemed like such a daunting post to write that I sort of gave up on it. Well, I’m laying here sick on the couch. What better time? I’ll be splitting it into several blog posts and there will be a ton of pictures. Be forewarned.

Day 1- OKC to Tucson

There really isn’t much to say here, except that after school on April 28th, I hopped on a plane and flew from OKC to LA and then from LA to Tucson. I felt a little strange about connecting in LA, since I would just be driving back there the next day, but it was the best connection I could get. Becca, Crystal, and Crystal’s husband Adam met me at the airport. I stayed the night with Becca and her very hungry cat, who decided to smother me with his cuteness and nom on my nose:

See this monster? Cute, yet frightening.

Becca so kindly let me bum on her couch and we stayed up into the wee hours of the morning watching these two get married:

Beautiful, weren’t they? My favorite part? The ginger of course!

Tomorrow, I’ll post about the good stuff. Expect lots of pictures!

Superhot Superheroes

Let’s talk about hot Scottish guys (with British accents) for a moment, shall we? I have your attention? Okay, good.

On Sunday, Rusty and I had time to kill before dinner at the Melting Pot (yum! btw), so we decided to go watch a movie. The only 2 movies we wanted to see were The Hangover 2 or X-Men. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Zach Galifianakis, but there really was no contest. We’re both X-Men fans, so it was the obvious choice.

I hadn’t really heard anything about the movie, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Let me be forthright. This isn’t a movie review. The story was good. We loved it. Now, let’s focus on the more important topic at hand: the deluge of hotness (mainly) in the form of my lover, James McAvoy:

Oh. My. Lord. Not only is he more than marginally beautiful, but I could listen to him all day long. Seriously, the man could talk about changing his oil and I’d listen. He played the young Professor Xavier, whom I already love, so I was a definite fangirl over this. Let’s just have some more hotness, shall we?

Rawr.

Of course if you’re not into delicious Scottish/British men, there are other delightful pieces of eye candy to fit your liking. (But if you don’t like hot Scottish/British men, I only have one thing to say: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???)

Let’s look at a few of those gorgeous gentlemen as well:

Exhibit A: Michael Fassbender (the best Magneto has ever looked!)

Exhibit B: Lucas Till (don’t worry…he’s 20)

Exhibit C: Edi Gathegi (of Twilight fame)

Exhibit D: Brenden Fehr (from Roswell and Bones)

See what I mean? I’m sure there were more, but these were the ones that stuck out to me.

Have you seen it? Who was your favorite character?
