Wake
by Lisa McMann
My rating: A+
Janie’s already crappy life changes at the age of 8 with her first dream disturbance. More accurately, it’s like a dream hijack. Janie’s dreams are not hers. They belong to everyone around her and she can’t figure out how to make them stop. Just when her world seems like it can’t possibly get any worse, she befriends Cabel and shares her secret. Can she trust him?
Oh. my. god. Amazing! This was one of those books that I totally picked because the cover intrigued me. I couldn’t sleep last night, so I started reading, since it was due back at the library soon. I devoured this. I was done with it in 2 and half hours.
Wake is written in an unusual style. McMann wrote it almost like a diary entry, but from the 3rd person, if that makes any sense. Each entry is headed with a time stamp instead of a date. I loved that Janie was such a real character with believable flaws. I could totally put myself into her shoes, and I was totally rooting for her. And Cabel? Complete literary cougar crush here. When I read one of the first interactions that they had in the book, I actually had to set it down for a second. Too bad he’s only 19. And fictional. This book was so full of surprises. I’m not one of those people that guess the endings of books or movies very often, but I think this would surprise anyone. I totally did NOT see the ending coming.
Go read this. Now. I’m totally bummed that I have to wait for book 2 and 3 from the library. If I wasn’t on a self-imposed book-buying ban (I’m broke, but I like to make myself think I created limits), I would totally run out and grab these from the book store.
Oh, and click on Lisa’s name to visit her website. It won’t put you to sleep. :wink, wink:

I loved this book too! Something different from all the regular stuff. I liked that it was set to a slightly older YA crowd.
Definitely have a literary crush on Cabel as well. I can’t wait to finish this series. I’ve heard Fade isn’t quite as good. Being a middle book of a trilogy, that’s not surprising.
Can’t wait to hear what you think of the rest!
