Evermore
by Alyson Noel
My rating: A-
Sixteen year old Ever is struggling with loss, change, and life in general. She is the only survivor of a car wreck which claimed the life of her mother, father, little sister, and her dog, Buttercup. Ever is forced to move to California from her home in Oregon to live with her father’s twin sister. Not only is Ever going through the grieving process and dealing with difficult changes, but she has a bigger problem. Since the accident, Ever can see auras and hear people’s thoughts. Adding psychic to the list of her qualifications is not Ever’s idea of a good time.
A new boy moves in and is quickly the talk of the entire school. Ever isn’t sure what to think when she spots him in the parking spot next to hers. Instead of being flooded with his thoughts and emotions like she normally is with a new person, there is complete silence. It’s a nice retreat for Ever, but there’s something mysterious about him that she just can’t pin down. It’s up to her to find it out.
I really liked this and there were times where I just can’t put it down. I don’t think I really captured the essence of this book in the summary, but I was afraid of spoiling it for you. I loved the relationship that Ever had with her little sister, Riley. It wasn’t perfect, but it was filled with love. It was as realistic for me as possible. After all, one sister IS a ghost. I also liked that the author incorporated a gay character without making it to ridiculous. There was mention of his sexual preference, but it wasn’t overplayed and didn’t feel like she was doing it just to add diversity. I had a hard time with some of the names at first (Ever, Haven, etc.), but I got over it. Overall, this was a really enjoyable paranormal YA.
And best of all…no vampires! Don’t get me wrong. I love vampires. I just think we all can use a break from them.
Oh, and if you want to check out the author, you can visit her website HERE and follow her on twitter HERE. She seems like a pretty cool chick. I look forward to learning more about her and reading more of her stuff.
And just because…I thought I’d leave you with a fuzzy self-portrait of my mom and I. She’s adorable. Just what you always wanted: a view up my nose. You’re welcome.
