The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things

by Carolyn Mackler

My rating: ***

Virginia is your average 15 year old girl, suffering from body image issues. Feeling like a social pariah and out of place among her perfect family, she vows to start doing things for herself. Virginia is a list maker. She has a best friend who lives across the country. She is sort of dating a boy named Froggy. Could things get any worse?

I really liked this book. It was a cute young adult novel that took me back to some of the things that I felt as a teenager. Heck, back to some of the things that I still feel. It sounds silly, but I still very much suffer with body issues, so it was fun to read about it from Virginia’s point of view.

Did this uncover any earth-shattering life principles? No. It did make me smile in a time that I very much needed to. For me, that is the sign of a good book. You don’t always have to learn something big or reveal secrets of the universe. Sometimes, it’s just good to enjoy a book. I did enjoy this one very much.
